About Podcasts
Podcasts are shows which are broadcast over the internet instead of over the airwaves or through cable. Podcasts come in both audio and video formats and there are shows for just about every topic imaginable. The length and quality of the shows vary greatly from podcast to podcast.

How Podcasts Are Delivered
Audio podcasts are traditionally delivered as MP3 files. This is a common format that can be played on any computer, portable media players such as the iPod or Zen, and in many consumer CD players. You do not need an iPod to listen to podcasts.

Video podcasts are delivered in many different video formats, but tend to use common formats to allow for the greatest audience viewership. Devices like the Apple TV can stream video from your PC or Mac to your television so you can watch the podcasts there instead of on your computer.

How Podcasts Are Broadcast (Subscribing To Podcasts)
Podcasts use an "RSS feed" which is an XML document that describes the podcast and is updated whenever a new episode is available. Programs called podcast clients or "podcatchers" read these documents and will automatically download new episodes for you when they become available. This is called subscribing to a podcast.

To subscribe to the podcast you will need to find the podcast's RSS feed and enter it into your podcatching program. The feed can usually be found on the podcast's web site. If you use iTunes you can also find podcasts in the iTunes Store and subscribe there simply by clicking on the Subscribe button. The large majority of podcasts are free.
